| Germany |
[Jun. 8th, 2009|10:12 am] |
I just remembered that I never posted when I got back from Germany. It was a really good trip. Very relaxing. We hung out with Carmel's family & spent a day hanging out with one of her good friends from high school.
Heidelberg castle was awesome! it was a perfect counterpoint to Neauschwanstein that we saw last year. Where Neauschwanstein was like a fairy tale, Heidelberg felt real. You could tell that people had lived and worked there. And their wine casks were unbelievable. That was the smaller one, btw :-)
This liquor store was awesome. They made their own liquors which were damned tasty. I bought a couple of bottles from them, but now wish I had bought more.
More pics here. |

Landed in Frankfurt this morning. (BTW Carmel and I are going to Germany again.) I'll be back in a couple of weeks but I'll mostly be out of touch until then... not that I have been very in touch lately. |

| Sweet dog needs a home... |
[Apr. 22nd, 2009|04:17 pm] |
motomuffin has been a saint in taking care of Bailey after her owner ( motomuffin's boss) passed away a month ago.
From motomuffin's original post:
She's a sweetheart except... she kind of eats cats. She has excellent car manners, is *extremely* house-trained, is mostly off-leash trained, knows all the classic dog commands, sleeps most of the time, doesn't like to walk (it's Out, Pee/Poo, In!). She's somewhere around 10 years old. She gets along with other dogs as long as their first meeting is mediated and there are abundant treats.
I've been asking around as I see people, but motomuffin can't keep her much longer because her cats are terrorized. Can anyone help out?

More info & links to bigger pics in her original post. |

All of the photos were taken by Carmel, except the ones with her in them. I took a few of those. |

| Rachel Getting Married |
[Nov. 26th, 2008|07:19 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | amused | ] | It's awesome when you go to a random movie and see a friend (and HUGE motorcycle/BMW enthusiast) of yours in it.
Carmel, her mother & I went to see Rachel Getting Married last night. About halfway though I did a double take when Jimmy Roche (AKA Dr. Curve) took the mic at the rehearsal dinner.
I knew he taught art at FSU, but had no idea he was ever in movies. Turns out he was a handful and just never talked about it. And not low budget flicks either: Philedelphia, The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Silence of the Lambs, Beloved & Something Wild.
That made my night.
As for the movie itself, it wasn't my type of movie, but it was very well done and unlike a lot of movie stars, Anne Hathaway can act. Who knew? |

| Election thoughts |
[Nov. 3rd, 2008|06:40 pm] |
PRESIDENT
I feel like I'm lucky this election. I realized we had terrible candidates incredibly early on and once I accepted that fact I've been able to relax and just enjoy the race.
The economy has been my number one issue for a couple of years now and this is a contest between someone who is fiscally an idiot and someone that holds ideas that are demonstrably wrong.
Generally, I'd rather have someone who is self serving, crooked and against my viewpoint than an idiot who agrees with me... and McCain doesn't even agree with me, so I have to say I think in general I slightly favor Obama over McCain, though they both suck.
The biggest benefit to Obama winning, is that if McCain wins we are guaranteed to have someone who is basically a crappy Democrat for 8 years (McCain for 4 and either McCain or a Democrat for he next 4) where we are only guaranteed 4 years of Democrat control with Obama.
So even though I won't be voting for him, I reluctantly want Obama to win.... and then become so incredibly ill that he can't leave his toilet for 4 years. I can dream, anyway.
QUESTION 1
Everyone should vote YES on question 1. Anyone who thinks it will actually hurt Massachusetts in anything other than the very short run needs to try living someplace other than here for few years. There they might learn how budget cuts help keep government efficient and how constantly giving them more money without the threat of taking it away leads to corruption and innefficiency (see the Big Dig for a perfect example).
The other reason to vote for this is the ads against it. The only ads against it are scare tactics and worse, deliberately misleading. Trying to scare people by saying that voting yes will raise taxes is bullshit.
I also prefer taxes to be on expenditures rather than income. Taxing expenses encourages conservative spending. Taxing incomes encourages nothing. Well, theoretically it could encourage spending very sightly (if someone else has more income they pay more taxes, so you get more benefits from the government), but not enough for me to count it.
QUESTION 2
This is a no brainer. Vote YES.
QUESTION 3
Vote NO. On this one I understand the thought and emotion behind voting yes, but it is wrong. If there are unscrupulous or malicious things going on in dog racing, then outlaw those things, don't outlaw the racing.
Dog racing is dying out anyway, so all this is doing is kicking a group while they are down. It also wouldn't surprise me (though I have no proof) that this is being supported by casino lobbyists. |

[Oct. 18th, 2008|12:03 pm] |
I'm currently posting from Icon, the biggest SF convention in Israel. Yes, Israel. Carmel & I are here for 12 days! So far it's great. The weather is perfect, the air has a nice scent of salt that you get near the beach and there is plenty of geekery around.
If I get ambtious I might actually post a second time while I'm here ;-) |

| Germany pics... finally |
[Jun. 13th, 2008|07:47 pm] |
Carmel finally put pictures from Germany up on her flickr account. She had to choose from 1200 pictures, so we might post more in the upcoming week.
Here they are: as a set as a slideshow
We'll be adding more descriptions as we have time.
Oh and rumor has it we might be posting some pics from Israel in the next few months ;-) |

| Snow and stuff. |
[Jan. 14th, 2008|05:27 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | happy | ] | SNOWWWW!!!!! And more coming this friday!!! I am happy and my car loves being sideways through turns!
Relatedly, I must highly recommend Nokian's Hakkapelitta tires. Combined with my all wheel drive, I have yet to find a hill that makes my car even blink. Today I had to stop going up a very steep, very slick hill, thanks to a big truck that was barrelling down the now narrow street. My car didn't hesitate or lose any traction restarting.
This weekend I cooked. Not once, not twice, but THREE times! I even improvised on one of the recipes! For those of you who don't know, this is not the norm. My idea of cooking is usually something along the lines of mac & cheese or tossing a frozen pizza in the oven. Making alfredo sauce from scratch (while relatively easy) is way out of my normal league.
In other news, there is apparently a program that gives away 100 gallons of heating oil. I don't know if any of you qualify, but if you do, awesome, even if it is from Hugo Chavez. |
